Earth and Life Coevolution in 加拿大
韦德体育app官网 faculty-led program to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and Ontario, 加拿大. The one-week field experience focuses on the coevolution of life and earth over long geological time scales. The boreal forests of the Upper Peninsula and northern Ontario contain one of the world’s best rock records for exploring the evolution of life on earth.

Students depart with the group from 韦德体育app官网 and travel by van to Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Ontario, 加拿大, for a field-based experience on the coevolution of life and earth where one of the world’s best rock records for these events is readily accessible.
Travel in Ontario, 加拿大, begins with exploration in 瓦瓦,一个盛产……的地区 gold and iron ore with sites of 古老的 叠层石, banded iron formations, and Snowball Earth. The group travels to Elliot Lake, 森林采伐中心, 矿山复垦专业知识, and advanced manufacturing with 古老的 glaciations with drop stones and fossilized ripple marks; and to 萨德伯里, once a major lumber center and a world leader in nickel mining, to visit uranium and cobalt mines, examine the history of rare earth elements and oxygen concentrations, 古老的 叠层石、减震锥.
The study trip concludes in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with visits to examine sites showing recent evidence of glaciation events and fossiliferous beds.

课程: BIO 3343: Earth and Life Coevolution (2 credits)
Course prerequisites/co-requisite: BIO 1300 or CHEM 1440 or PHY 1060 or ENV 3090. The course counts as a lab credit for Biology majors.
Course format includes six on-campus meetings followed by a seven-day field trip. The field experience is on the coevolution of life and earth over long geological time scales (astrobiology). 学生将观察, 讨论, and analyze the geological record of planetary- scale glacial-interglacial events in relation to evolutionary innovations in life, 气候变化, microbial ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles.
